I was appalled by the recent video evidence that led to the conviction of your long-time staff member, Stowe Beagles Kennel Huntsman Mr Philip Kennedy, for illegal hunting.
The cruelty visited on the hare in the video is absolutely sickening.
Indeed, everything about the video suggests that this cruelty and criminality was not a one-off event but is routine practice at the Stowe Beagles. For example,
· The way that Mr. Kennedy, your pupils and the other adults present work together to hunt the hare over a sustained period.
· The disturbing congratulatory handshakes between Mr. Kennedy and Stowe pupils upon the death of the hare.
· The way that the huntsman pats a hound after killing the hare.
· The focus on the tearing apart of the hare – a technique well-known in hunting circles for keeping hounds ‘in blood.’
It is quite obvious that the video is also evidence of a catastrophic failure of safeguarding at your school.
With a new hare hunting season about to begin, I urge you to shut down the Stowe Beagles, re-home the hounds and make a public statement to this effect immediately.
