Eleven months since the Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Act of 2023 became law, Glasgow Hunt Sabs are pleased to report the demise of another Scottish fox hunt. The Liddesdale Foxhounds – who were kennelled in the Scottish Borders – follow in the footsteps of both the Fife Foxhounds and the Lanarkshire & Renfrewshire Hunt in going under.
Little is known about the elusive Liddesdale Foxhounds despite them being one of the oldest fox hunts in Scotland. However, we do know that the Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Act was the cause of the hunt folding over the summer of 2024.
The Liddesdale Foxhounds kept well away from the public eye, operating by invite only and hunting on scrambler motorbikes across a vast upland territory. Hunt sabs never had the pleasure of stopping the hunt due to their secrecy, and other packs in the Scottish Borders being more accessible.
The demise of the Liddesdale Foxhounds means there are now just seven registered hunts left in Scotland, all of which are trying different ways to continue. Since the Act became law, two hunts have been the subject of a police investigation for illegal hunting with one leading to three charges for Matthew Wilkinson, huntsman of the Jed Forest Hunt.
Whilst the future looks uncertain for more of Scotland’s fox hunts, hunt saboteurs will be putting in the work to expose any illegal activity, working tirelessly to bring the number of hunts down, and making sure every hunt in Scotland gets their attention.
