Last Saturday, the Brecon-based Sennybridge Farmers Hunt caught and killed a female fox. Foot sabs rushed into the field but were too far away to stop the kill – it was very sudden.
Sabs had pulled over to allow vehicles to pass and then saw the hounds hunting south along Fforest Fach, west of Defynnog. Suddenly, there was a fox in the field and hounds were on her straight away. Foot sabs raced towards them but sadly the fox was already dead by the time they got there.
Sabs bravely retrieved the fox’s body and headed back to the vehicle. They tried to ring the police but there was no phone signal from the road, so sabs left her body in the vehicle and went back into the field to get signal and report the kill to the police.
As sabs were on the phone to the police, hunt supporters arrived, clearly aware that the hounds had just killed. They started shoving sabs out of the field, before starting their search for the body. One of them claimed to be the farmer – clearly content to allow illegal hunting on his land.
Around this time, the huntsman began using horn calls to gather the hounds, from quite some distance away on top of the hill. The sabs left the area and laid the beautiful fox to rest in a peaceful place far, far away from hunt thugs, where she won’t be disturbed.
A South Wales sab commented:
“This is the third season we have been sabbing the Sennybridge Farmers Hunt and have seen them lurch from crisis to crisis, but they continue to hunt and kill foxes. We’ve managed to save many foxes from them, but this vixen was caught and killed so quickly we didn’t have time to get to her. For her and all the other foxes in danger from hunts, we urgently need a ban on the trail hunting scam.”
