For Fox Sake! Pro-hunting Telegraph Scores An Own Goal

In a major gaff, the fanatically pro-hunting Daily Telegraph has illustrated a recent article defending “trail hunting” with an image of Ollie Thompson, one of the most sadistic fox hunting criminals to be brought to justice in recent years.

Telegraph Thompson presents the smokescreen of trail hunting…and the reality.

The Telegraph’s photograph shows the red-coated Thompson when he was huntsman of the notorious Avon Vale Hunt, which was disbanded after he and other leading members were convicted of extreme animal cruelty.

A video used in the 2024 court case shows Thompson sitting deep in a hole trying to get at a terrified fox that has sought refuge from the hounds. With help from a terrierman, he grabs the poor animal and throws her to the hounds. The hunters whoop with delight as the fox is torn to pieces and, as the video closes, Thompson is seen slapping a terrierman on the back in celebration.

Scum: Thompson (left) laughs as the live fox is torn to pieces.

In court Thompson was described as “sadistic” and playing a “leading role” in the cruelty – with the presence of a young child being particularly criticised by the judge.

But Telegraph Thompson’s cruelty and criminality does not end there.

Thompson removes the fox cub from the cage to continue her torture.

He also featured in a series of animal torture videos which are believed to have been taken in 2020 when he was still at the Avon Vale Hunt.

Shot by Thompson’s sick wife Felicity, the videos show him using a terrier to torment a caged fox cub. In one video, Thompson baits the terrified cub with the terrier. In another video, Thompson lifts the cub from the cage and goads the terrier with her, while Felicity laughs in the background. The fate of the cub is unknown.

Thompson tortures the fox with a spade.

An HSA spokesperson commented,

“For once, the Hunt Saboteurs Association would like to commend the Daily Telegraph for its journalism. In selecting an image of Ollie Thompson for their witless article, the Telegraph have perfectly illustrated why the smokescreen of “trail hunting” must be banned.

We urge our supporters to look again at Thompson’s smug face in the Telegraph article and then fill out the government’s consultation on banning “trail hunting” without delay.”

The government has launched a public consultation on Trail Hunting – this is our chance to stop cruel hunting for good. You can read the HSA’s guidance and take part in the consultation here. The deadline is 18th June 2026 – make sure your voice is heard.
