Hunt Saboteurs Association Says “Free Paul Watson!”

Paul-Watson

The HSA is today urging its thousands of supporters to get behind the campaign to free legendary anti-whaling activist Captain Paul Watson, who has been arrested by Danish police in Nuuk, Greenland.

Paul is unlikely to need much introduction to HSA supporters – he was a co-founder of Greenpeace before setting up the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 1977. He now leads the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and has an unrivalled record of shutting down whaling operations across the world.

There has always been a close affinity between hunt sabs and Sea Shepherd/CPWF born of our shared belief in uncompromising direct action. Many sabs have crewed on Sea Shepherd/CPWF vessels over the years, and Paul was himself an active hunt sab in Scotland in the 1980s.

The arrest

Paul was arrested when over a dozen Danish police and SWAT team members boarded his ship, the M/Y John Paul DeJoria as it docked in Nuuk, Greenland. Paul had stopped to refuel in Greenland with a 25 volunteer crew while enroute to the North-West Passage on a mission to intercept Japan’s newly launched factory whaling ship.

The arrest is in relation to an Interpol notice from Japan issued in March 2024. Paul will remain in custody until at least 15th August, while the Danish decide whether to extradite him to Japan, where he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Let’s get Captain Watson back where he belongs!
